Catastrophe / Eucatastrophe (One Useful Thing) - “We all have some choices to make about AI, and we need to make those decisions soon. Here’s some thoughts about what managers, leaders, and educators need to consider. If we don't make these choices, I fear that they will be made for us.”
Students and Parents are Bullish on AI’s Potential for Education (Edweek) - A recent poll by Common Sense Media reveals that a majority of students aged 12-18 (58%) have used AI-powered tool ChatGPT, with 54% of students being aware of it compared to only 30% of parents. The poll also reveals an optimism regarding AI's potential in education, with 77% of parents and 92% of students interested in AI learning tools, but there is also concern, shared by students and parents, about over-reliance on AI and the need for clear guidelines and rules for its use in classrooms.
AI is Disrupting Higher Education — Will Traditional Colleges Survive? (Entrepreneur) - This article explores the transformative influence of artificial intelligence (AI) on higher education, highlighting how it can customize learning, provide real-time feedback, and streamline administrative processes, while also posing challenges to traditional institutions due to the shift towards online education and competition from alternative education providers. It further emphasizes the need for colleges to adapt to technological advancements, foster a symbiotic relationship between AI and human educators, and reimagine the college experience to survive and thrive in the digital age.

Amazon Planning AI Chatbot for Shoppers: Amazon intends to develop a chatbot driven by artificial intelligence (AI), much like Google's recent enhancement to its search function. The objective is to leverage AI to augment the interactivity and utility of their search mechanism. They aim to simplify the process of locating products, comparing various alternatives, and receiving optimal suggestions, making it as straightforward as having a conversation.
Google Announces Major Upgrades to Bard & Google Workspace Suite at their I/O 2023 Event: Google has introduced several new features and upgrades including: a "Help me write" feature in Gmail for email draft suggestions; an "Immersive View" in Maps for pre-journey previews; a "Magic Editor" in Google Photos for advanced photo editing; the PaLM 2 language model for improved logic and reasoning; and Gemini, a new multimodal foundation for efficient tool and API integrations.

AI art generators like MidJourney are improving, but still notoriously bad at drawing hands. They attribute this to human behaviors with hands - we don’t know what to do with them so they often don’t end up in our photos!
